Ajiro is the Japanese plaiting used for ceilings, fences and summer hats — thin bamboo strips crossed into a repeating lattice. It is the gaps that matter.

Woven tight, you get a lampshade. Woven open like this, the bulb reads through it and throws the pattern outward, so the light lands on your walls instead of stopping at the shade.

Open enough to breathe

Every strip is plaited by hand, so the gaps vary slightly from lamp to lamp — tighter in some rows, wider in others. That is the weave doing its job, not a flaw to overlook.

The same gaps that let the pattern out also let heat escape. An open weave breathes better than a sealed drum shade, so heat has somewhere to go instead of building up under the bamboo.

Do I need to buy a bulb?

No. It arrives with one, and the socket takes any standard E26 bulb if you want to swap it later.

Is it hard to install?

It is a standard pendant fitting with a 39 in cord. If you have swapped a ceiling light before, it is the same job. If not, an electrician will do it in under an hour.

Can I dim it?

Yes, on a dimmer switch. Turned low, the lattice pattern gets sharper and the bamboo goes amber.

Does the shade get hot?

The open weave lets heat escape rather than trapping it under a solid shade. If you swap the bulb, an LED runs cooler than incandescent and pairs well with the dimmer.
